On March 12, 2020, the mayor of New York City declared a state of emergency in response to the rapid spread of COVID-19. In addition, quarantine was enforced so that people needed to stay home. Restaurants, bars, gyms, salons, and so on were temporarily or permanently closed. 

New York City finally reopened indoor dining on October 3, 2020. According to Yelp, on September 11, 2020, nearly 6,000 businesses closed in New York City. More than 4,000 of them have closed permanently. Businesses have closed in the business districts of all five boroughs.

TEMPORARY AND PERMANENTLY CLOSED RESTAURANTS & BUSINESSES IN NYC

On December 11, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that indoor dining in New York City would be closed again next week, allowing only outdoor dining and food delivery services due to the increasing number of cases of COVID-19. In response, the restaurant industry has a hard time. COVID-19 has hit the U.S. restaurant industry hard, causing about one in six restaurants to close permanently or permanently.

PERMANENTLY CLOSED RESTAURANTS IN NYC BY CATEGORIES

New York City officially restarted its economy on June 8, 2020, but many businesses cannot wait for that day. On June 5, Hakata Tonton, a much-loved Japanese restaurant in New York City's West Village, closed its doors for good after 13 years. Hakata Tonton comes from Hakata in Fukuoka, Japan. The restaurant was busy. However, with COVID-19 spreading, Hakata Tonton closed its doors before the economy could restart. Hakata Tonton is not alone. Previously, the National Restaurant Association (NRA) reported that about 25,000 restaurants in New York City, or about 4%, had closed permanently during the COVID-19 outbreak.

One year after the shutdown of indoor dining in New York City, the closing rate of restaurants and bars are still high. Due to the economic crisis caused by the pandemic, more than 1,000 have shut down since March. Restaurants that are permanently closed in New York City are shown below. All closed restaurants are divided into twenty categories: Contemporary, Vietnamese, Korean, Barbecue, Bar, etc. By pulling the slider, the restaurants under the matching boroughs will be highlighted.

OPEN STREETS SCHEDULE 2021, NYC

Over the next 10 years, the open streets program will become a trend to support individuals and small businesses. City transportation, circulation, and urban design will be reorganized to suit this business mode. The map is interactive with buttons. Once clicked on the button, the map will show corresponding streets. The “Weekend only” and “Dinner only” selections are virtually designed and have not yet been applied in the real world.

OPEN RESTAURANTS ON SIDEWALK, 2020 - 2021, NYC

According to U.S. media reports, more than 70 percent of the state's 19 million adults have received at least one dose of the vaccine. With the outbreak partially under control, New York State announced on June 15 that it was utterly unsealed.

The three purple circles represent the number of restaurants that are open for sidewalks. Three boroughs of data are collected from June 2020 to May 2021 in New York City. With the control of the spread of Covid-19 and the vaccine injection, more and more restaurants are opened for sidewalks. To reflect that change, the circles become larger and larger.

OPEN RESTAURANTS ON SIDEWALK, MARCH 2021, NY

During Covid-19, restaurants were temporarily closed in 2020 in New York City. However, with the control of the spread of the virus, restaurants that have achieved the Open Restaurants sidewalk requirements can now serve food on the sidewalk. The drawing and the data below show three boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens - how many restaurants are open for sidewalk till March. The data has been divided into five weeks, with each circle color showing a specific borough. The restaurant information can be read by putting the mouse in the circle.

PPP LOAN RECIPIENT LIST — MIDTOWN, NYC

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) is a loan program run by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) department. It helps businesses pay their employees, rent, insurance, etc. during the COVID-19 pandemic. Any business with less than 500 employees is able to apply for a loan. The business owners can directly apply for a PPP loan through participating banks or lending institutions. The PPP loan is a federally guaranteed loan with an interest rate capped at 1% annually, and there is a fraction that does not need to be repaid. The PPP loans saved the unemployment rate and kept many dying businesses still open.

 PPP LOAN RECIPIENT LIST — DOWNTOWN, NYC

One good fact about the PPP loan is that the borrowers can apply for forgiveness. The PPP loan borrowers can qualify for full loan forgiveness if employment levels are maintained and the loans are spent in the right place with at least 60% on payroll cost during the 8- to 24- weeks of the loan period. By May 31, 2021, there is a total of 5,467 lenders participating in the program with almost $800 billion worth of net dollars loaned. The PPP loan help save the economic downturn influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
