Bushwick Adaptive Rebuild
Jayden Huang and Peyton Catarelli
Historical Analysis
Mixed-use buildings were typical of early Bushwick. However, as Bushwick suffered from crime and disinvestment in the late 20th century, these buildings were erased and replaced with single-story commercial developments. Our proposal seeks to return to this historical typology to provide transit-oriented, town-center type housing in a time where demand for housing has long outgrown the existing building stock.
System Diagram
To build housing on these sites, new materials must be introduced to the system. Our proposed method of construction aims to mitigate the carbon costs of new development by first disassembling the existing materials of the site and repurposing them where possible. New materials that enter the system fit criteria of being low in embodied carbon and having potential for reuse/reformulation at the end of the new building’s life.
